Godgory - "Way Beyond"
Nuclear Blast (2001)
Godgory
Genre: Gothic Death Metal
Similar bands: Moonspell

Review:
Godgory started over nine years ago, as a cover band playing Napalm Death and Entombed songs! That is a far stretch from the direction they took when they started writing their own music two years after their inception.

Their newest CD "Way Beyond" is death metal mixed with goth and doom. Think if Moonspell were heavier and the vocals more guttural. Very melodic and very slow, with lots of lead rhythms and ethereal keyboard parts. The music is as much beautiful as it is sorrowful. This delicate balance has been attempted by other bands, but rarely fulfilled as well as Godgory pull it off. If a metalhead lost a loved one, this might be the album they choose for mourning purposes. As a matter of fact, I believe that the first song might be about such a loss, although the lyrics weren't provided, so I have nothing to back that claim. The production on this CD was probably a nightmare because there's a lot going on. Many layers of guitar work (including an acoustic), keyboards, and more. Whoever handled the knobs did an excellent job.
