Review:
Three years ago, two drunken Finns came up with an idea to play folk-laden black metal rather accidently. It was then that Finntroll was born and it is now that Century Media brings us a proper US release for their second full length in the form of "Jaktens Tid".

Self-labeled "advanced trollish metal" (no joke), Finntroll incorporate traditional Finnish "humppa" style (a variety of polka) to their music. You can hear this throughout all the tracks, in the keyboards and guitars, and even sometimes the vocals, where often an odd Viking chant vocal is preferred over the standard black metal belch (which are used as well). The group could most compared to space metal masters Covenant on their "Nexus Polaris" album, Bal-Sagoth or Moonsorrow, whom actually donates a member to the group in Trollhorn, their keyboardist. A perfect example of hearing all the things that Finntroll bring to the table is "Slaget vid Blodsalv". This track almost crosses the border of cheesy, but it's a good song. It starts off with a total polka intro, into a more space metal part, which then goes into an epic Bal-Sagoth part with trumpets played on the keyboards.

While the ideas behind the group may be kinda hokey (I mean trolls? cmon...), they actually write some damn good, and definitely unique music. If you're into the symphonic melodic style black metal, but think the scene is getting bland and all the bands are cloning each other, Finntroll might be a band to break you out of that rut.
