| Death's frontman and songwriter, Chuck Schuldiner, has been credited for starting what we now know as death metal. While words like "visionary" have been hackneyed by critics, Chuck Schuldiner is truly the pioneer of an entire genre. When the legend was diagnosed with having brain cancer a few years ago, the entire metal scene was taken aback. Tons of supporters started funds to help a fallen hero. This CD "Live in L.A. (Death & Raw)" is one such example. The money raised from the sales of this disc will help pay for Chuck's expensive hospital costs. And besides that, it's a damn good listen. This is an extraordinary live album. On one hand, it's not so horrible sounding that it's unworth buying, but on the other, it's not so professionally recorded that it almost defeats the purpose of a live album. You're not getting Death's best takes from three different shows... this was all recorded one night, and you can even hear a few minor mistakes if you really listen. Recorded on the band's "Sounds of Perseverance" tour with Hammerfall, the album spans the group's career, although a majority of the songs are from their last album. All the classic cuts are given their time though, including "The Philosopher", "Zero Tolerance" and "Pull the Plug". The disc is over seventy minutes long and has fourteen tracks, so you're definitely getting your money's worth. At one point, Chuck mentions to the crowd that "we're running short on time, so we're going to have to skip some songs and go right to the last one". Another amazing thing about Chuck Schuldiner is his ability to weather the storm. Throughout Death's long career, all the setbacks and lineup changes never got in his way from consistently putting out great albums. Even bands who have had the same headcount for practically their entire careers can't claim that (can anyone say Metallica, Cannibal Corpse or Slayer's "God Hates Us All"?). Someone with that much dedication and drive can conquer anything. He will persevere. As will the memory of Death via this live disc. |
